Pirates Cove Coffee and Ocean Beach - 2009-04-20 20:48:05
<<< Previous - Grocery Store Ponderings... | Next - Stonehenge, Donuts, Blogging, and Discovery Channel Weirdness >>>So we were driving around
Ocean Beach this weekend, looking for things to photograph. And as we turn this corner a pirate flag jumped out at me...
For those non California folk - one of the things locals apparently really
need are lots of drive through places for coffee. Because it's vital that Californians keep up that caffeine buzz while they motor around the place. They're usually just little kiosks in parking lots, nothing fancy. But as soon as I saw
this one with the pirate theme I had to have us double back and get a better look at it.
Pirates Cove Coffee
Neighborhoods: Ocean Beach, Point Loma
4949 Santa Monica Ave, in the Apple Tree parking lot
(between Bacon St & Cable St)
So we slowly drive through the parking lot so I can get a better look at the place. I would have gotten out and taken many more shots - only there was a street fair in another area of Ocean Beach, and parking lots everywhere were packed. The best we could do was drive by and look.
Normally I'd want to buy a drink at this place, just to do my part to make sure it stays in business. Because we can always use a bit of amusing eye candy in our neighborhoods.
I'm thinking we should go back on a quieter weekend for a smoothie.
Jon gets bonus hawkeye points for seeing this great "take a photo or no one will believe" billboard in Ocean Beach...
...So, no idea why that sign is going to make me 1) laugh or 2) drink Pepsi. I don't think this has anything to do with me no longer being part of the demographic they're shooting for and everything to do with this being a dumb attempt at marketing. Maybe the designer really had no clue what LOL means...
Here we are, scootching our way slowly through the Saturday traffic:
And so I had another one of my "Fascinated by Palm Trees" moments. See, if you grow up in an area that doesn't have palm trees you get a bizarre idea of them, in which they are all exotic, uniform and similar. And not this fantastically tall. These particular palms in Ocean Beach are like some kind of abstract version - with the impossibly elongated, skinny trunks and the tiny clump of leaves at the top. Someday I'll actually go do some research about
palms and learn more about why the different varieties look the way they do. (I think these may be
Washingtonia robusta. Just a guess.)
More beach photos tomorrow - for now I'll leave you with this shot of some Curbsitters:
With beach vollyball going on behind them, these dudes were hanging on the curb, checking out the oncoming traffic. Very mellow way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
