Listening to This Week:

Listening to Now:

Reading Offline:
Elephants on Acid: And Other Bizarre Experiments
by Alex Boese

Really odd book about various "scientific" experiments, some gruesome, many just insane. Have't yet gotten to the elephants on acid part, but am definitely freaked out by the "let's decapitate an animal and try to keep just the head alive" chapter. Ugh.

Savage Beauty: The Life of Edna St. Vincent Millay
by Nancy Milford

I never read much of Millay before, but Milford wrote a really interesting biography of Zelda Fitzgerald, so I was interested to see her next book. Still in the first chapter, but the prolog was amusing in itself. I always appreciate reading the background of how the author started on the book.

Kitchen Confidential Updated Ed: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly
by Anthony Bourdain

I gave this to Jon as a gift a while back and only just recently remembered I never did borrow and read it myself. Am very amused so far. Sadly it's not the updated edition I've linked to - preface in our copy's dated Nov. 2000. Wonder what's been added/changed/corrected.

The New Kings of Nonfiction
by Ira Glass

Collection of nonfiction articles previously published in various magazines. Bought a while back in an airport and there are still a few articles I haven't finished reading. I really liked the Bill Buford article that became Among the Thugs.

...About?...
Batgrl is a pop culture junky who loves to mess about with cameras and video games. And is constantly amused by Jon, who she did honest and truly did meet online. Though she's been blogging since the '90s, evil sp@m'rs managed to break the old blog, and thus there's only more recent stuff here. (No great loss, actually!)

Tag'd by the 123 Meme - 2008-02-06 21:23:57
<<< Previous - Superbowl Ads and Double Dipping | Next - The Grim Story of the Bath School Disaster >>>

Ok, it's been eons since I've been tag'd with a meme - so it isn't a surprise that I'm a bit late to post it either huh? Anyhow Jen tagged me - and the meme is:
The 123 Rules:
1) Pick up the book nearest you with at least 123 pages. (No cheating!)
2) Turn to page 123.
3) Count the first five sentences.
4) Post the next three sentences.
5) Tag five other bloggers.

So here we go...
"Lehder kept copious, detailed notes in thick manila folders fastened with string. From an embezling bank executive, he learned the finer points of money laundering. From a Medicare-scamming doctor, he learned the how to hide out on Caribbean islands."

and I have to quote the sentence just after that one:
"From Watergate burglar G. Gordon Liddy, he learned how to crease his pants and project an air of unquestionable authority."

That's from p. 123 of Based on a True Story: Fact and Fantasy in 100 Favorite Movies, by Jonathan Vankin and John Whalen. From the chapter on the 2001 film Blow. Which I've actually never seen.

...Except I just realized that this book really wasn't the closest to me. Instead it should have been:
"Prepare the food while the water heats in the canner. When the water is hot, fill each jar following recipe directions, and place on the rack in the canner so it can heat as the other jars are filled. Jars should not touch."

Which is from the Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook. My mother and I had been having a conversation about a recipe and she has an older version of this book, which she used in high school home econ class - so I was giving her info from this 1981 version, which has different measurements and cooking settings. Of course that was a few weeks ago and now I can't remember what the recipe was. Oh well....hmmm...cookie recipes.... Much nostalgia for mom's version of the book, which is the old 3 ring binder version and has cartoons here and there of people cooking...randomly you can still buy the ring binder version...

Oh wait, I have to tag other bloggers, um...ok - I'll tag Linkmeister, Moosie, Skatemom, Dogs Don't Purr, Dyslexic Chicken and MeanLousise. I think that's more than I'm supposed to but heck, I'll pretend I can't count. Plus that way it won't matter if they don't all decide to follow the meme.

Now...back to reading cookie recipes....

I have the ring binder version of the Better Homes and Gardens cookbook, as luck would have it! I love that cookbook. All the basic, must-know stuff is in it.

Grrrr. We'll see.

I remember doing this meme like 4 years ago, and the nearest book to me was the New York State Civil Service Code. I'm not playing again.

hey!!!! sigh - all right!
;)

Wow...I've been tagged?! I'll have to work on this. Most of the books I have are ebooks. Does that count? Hmmm. I've got some real books around here somewhere, though. I'll try and find something juicy.

Heh - Linky you can always tag Bunny and Jon safely - Bunny's awol from her blog and Jon pays no mind to memes, so you're safe there!

Wow, if ebooks count I have no idea what to do - I think I have a couple in here downloaded from WOWIO that I've never gotten rid of. Hmmm.

Randomly I just snagged the book nearest Jon, just for the heck of it. On p. 123:
"Sear the other side for about 20 seconds. Transfer to the baking sheet, folding it in half. Continue dipping and frying the remaining tortillas, wiping the pan occasionally and then heating another tablespoon of oil or lard to fry a new batch."
Yummy, huh? That's from making enchiladas, from Rick Bayless' Mexico One Plate at a Time.

Alright, I got it up. Kinda made up my own rules, but sometimes that makes it more fun!

um, yesterday when I saw this, the nearest "book" was the Statement of Work/Contract for the consulting job I'm on, and I don't know that I could have posted that.... today, it's UltraMarathon Man by Dean Karnazes. Kewl!! Posting now!

OK. I'll play tomorrow. and I'll play along on the meatblog for faith.

Still need to create a meatblog login for you. I think I'm going to move the site today, will keep you posted. Would Jon like to meatblog as well?

I might get to it today, but it's the Virginia primary and my brain is the consistency of stewed cabbage.

Yes yes, I too want to meatblog!

Mostly because now that you started it I keep seeing bacon everywhere! And I admit, I've been dying to try the gummy bacon. Which I will do, just for your blogging amusement!
Hee hee!
Jon often drags his feet about posting on his own blog so I'm thinking he's out for the count. Heck I can't even get him to post photos of his bacon burger! I'm sure it'll pop up in a month or so, and then I'll run amuck in his comments.
