For those wanting more Droid vs Point n Shoot Camera Comparisons - 2010-01-27 19:12:29

And it's time for another short one, thanks to our recent trip to Montana. Because I did some camera comparisons from the plane. Note: the following "look out the aircraft window" are probably only of interest to other Droid owners and not terribly exciting. Sorry about that.
Also these shots aren't really a side-by-side - the plane was moving a tad fast and all, so it wasn't possible to get the exact same photo with each camera

And then the Droid camera's version:

Different mountains but the sun is basically the same. Both were bumped a bit in Photoshop to look a bit better. On the Droid I use Adobe Photoshop Mobile because I usually only want to crop and twiddle with the saturation just a touch. I also have the apps FxCamera abd PicSay, but I tend to only play with them when I'm bored and not post the results.
Here're two more taken only a few minutes apart.

And now the Droid version:

I did crop out the plane in the Droid shot, but they're basically the same lighting, the same mountains, just a hundred miles distant or roundabout that.
I know we had an update to the droid's camera software a while back but I honestly can't tell that it made a great deal of difference. Sometimes shots look more murky than others, sometimes not. It takes a long time for the shot to actually take - there's a curious delay involved any time I click the photo button.
Short version: This isn't a camera I'm going to rummage out of my bag when I'm carrying my Canon, and I still carry it whenever I leave the house.
But it is fun to mess about with. For instance, here's my lovely bottle of Fiji water on the flight to Montana. I've used the app FXCamera to turn it into "as if shot with a Toy Camera." Which means that once you turn on the app you only are able to take the picture as seen through a sort of filter.

Now if I'd really been clever I'd have taken a shot with the regular camera, instead of FXCamera, to see what it'd look like on normal mode. But still, it's a fun toy to play with. Here's Sharon and nephew as shot with an old fashioned Polaroid - though the app sneakily calls it Polandroid:

Both are fun, and definitely the kind of thing to share if you're wasting time in an airport for instance. Or blogging about the droid camera. Besides those two options there's a fisheye vision, a mirror reflection, and a Warholizer mode. Oh and I only have the free version of FXCamera. No idea what any other versions are like.
Because I know the Warholizer makes you curious, here's what it looks like with a Coke can on my desk:

Yes, very lurid, I agree.
Just consulted with fellow droid owner Jon and it turns out that yes, others experience the annoying "camera hesitates when you hit the take photo button such that you often miss the photo." They REALLY need to fix that bug. At least I assume it's a bug, right?
