New Orleans Thanksgiving - 2009-11-26 09:00:07
<<< Previous - More Dithering About the Droid | Next - Things I Learn About Via Twitter: Robot Wars >>>Hey Jon's right, I can access my blog via phone...
Now to figure out how to make a set of Flicker to direct you to.
Meanwhile keep an eye on the twitter feed, that's where I'll update more...
...Hmm. Seems trickier than I thought to add a new set on Flicker. So just keep an eye on the feeds to the left. Meanwhile I'll start a list of where we've been...
Wed. Dinner
Bourbon House - excellent, especially the pecan pie
Advice to people waiting in line for the
Acme Oyster House - don't bother with it when the line is stretching around the block - try the Bourbon next door. Go back to the Acme during a non rush hour.
Thursday breakfast
At
Monteleone's restaurant
Thurs. Lunch
Bayona - excellent, will gush in detail later
Thurs. Dinner
...remains to be seen if we'll have room...
...and no, not only no room but we all went back to hotel for a long nap. And then - yay, Mythbusters marathon on. tv! We'll be up early tomorrow for breakfast and lots of walking around, looking at stuff. So far all food has been excellent. Jon said he was reminded why he loves this city - the pate at lunch sent him into raptures. I have better (non cell phone) photos to share when we get home.
Also totally forgot to take family photo to email to folks. Mostly because camera phone is awful for indoor shots and by the time we got outside we were so full our brains shut down. Ok mostly mine - but wow, such a great nap...
So family - photo tomorrow.
Surprise Room Service
Jon - oyster poboy
Batgrl -pecan pie
Friday Breakfast
At Monteleone's restaurant
Friday Lunch
At place in French Market - good gumbo
Friday Dinner
Galatoires - not recommended, blog post with details later, first dining disappointment here so we're not terribly upset. But for anyone skimming this - DO NOT EAT HERE. You will not get your money's worth either in service or food - the new management isn't up to the old standards that I'd read about.
Saturday breakfast
Cafe Beignet - quick place to grab breakfast, nothing out of the ordinary. Didn't see beignets on the menu, oddly.
Saturday lunch
Mother's - loooove that roast beef
Saturday dinner
NOLA, one of Emmeril's restaurants - another excellent meal, both service and food
Sunday breakfast
Court of Two Sisters buffet - Jon's statement: "The best peel n eat shrimp ever!"
I found that Bananas Foster is epic on French toast.
Currently we're in the airport - will Jon be insane enough to try and find room for a farewell poboy? Granted, it's airport food, but he is kinda crazy over poboys.
Dec. 1, 2009
Safely home. To our joy the cat did not barf while we were gone - and there was much rejoicing. (It's NOT the first thing you want to come home to!)
Can't remember if Jon got an airport poboy - I don't think he did. We did get plain ol' sandwiches in the Houston airport though.
Added links to all the restaurants, in case anyone is curious. This was my second stay at the Monteleone and I would highly recommend them - great staff, good breakfasts, and a location that puts you in walking distance to anything in the French Quarter. It's worth it not to worry about where to park the car.
Also I should add that our particular reason in going to New Orleans - besides a good place to meet up between my parents' city and where we live - is to put some funds back into the city. I moved from Louisiana to California a year or so before Katrina, and have always wanted to do something more than just donate to the Red Cross. Since so much of New Orleans (which has long been a favorite city of mine) economy is tourist based, putting some tourism dollars in local restaurants and a hotel seemed a good idea.
Those contemplating their own holiday trip - book your restaurant on Turkey Day several weeks in advance, just to be safe. Though most hotels will usually have some service on that day and we saw plenty of advertisements in windows saying certain places will be open - it never hurts to call ahead. Plus several places turned out to be closed on Thanksgiving once I did call and ask, so it'll vary depending on the restaurant. Also I'd say that not very many places we looked at are clear on their websites whether they'll be open or not - so phone calls are necessary.
I'd like to thank the folks on MetaFilter in
this thread who gave us dinner suggestions - we didn't get around to all the ideas though, so we'll just have to go back again sometime!
